Many Americans associate 19th-century British landscape artist J.M.W. Turner with his oil paintings, but Turner also painted prolifically in watercolor both as an aid to memory and for experimentation. In fact, at Turner’s death in 1851, more than 30,000 watercolors and sketches were found in his studio. This fall, a major new exhibition in partnership with the Tate, London, brings some 91 watercolors, four oil paintings and one of the artist’s sketchbooks to the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut, for its only North American showing. J.M.W. Turner: Watercolors from Tate runs from October 5, 2019, to February 23, 2020.
